Carolina Cotton Family Session
Carolina Cotton Fields
Carolina cotton fields are just about the most beautiful place to photograph during dusk. This Carolina cotton family session took full advantage of the gorgeous setting. Our evening was absolutely perfect. The sun was hanging in the most lovely position right above the tree line, and as we started shooting, a smokey haze settled gently above the field.
The last couple hours of daylight, also referred to as Golden Hour, created the soft light that is in these images. It is a warm, cozy kind of glow that almost seems to blanket itself around the subject. For these shots, I was shooting with my Nikon d610/ Nikkor 50 mm f1.8 lens. The ISO was set at 640, shutter speed was between 1/500 and 1/800 and my f-stop ranged from 2.8 to 4.0. This created a brighter image with a somewhat blurred background that still retained the image’s clarity.
How I Worked The Session
We jumped right into the session. As with any session that involves young children, there is generally a period of warming up. The cotton was a natural way to make the little fella in the images feel comfortable. I also like to help “break the ice” by acting silly with the child or asking questions about the child’s interests. And if these tips don’t work, I usually resort to having mom and dad join in on a fun game of tickling. This is also a great way to get some candid shots that families love to have! For these particular images, I used every one of these techniques!
